How to set up the integration between Interactive Legal and DecisionVault?
Setting up the integration involves the following steps:
- Authenticate Interactive Legal Online with DecisionVault
- Sync a Matter and Contacts to Interactive Legal
1. Authenticate Interactive Legal Online with DecisionVault
To authenticate Interactive Legal with DecisionVault go to the integrations page - and look for the 'Authenticate with ILS' button. Follow the instructions to create an API key in ILS and save it in DecisionVault.

Note: this only stores an 'access token' in DecisionVault to access ILS on your behalf. We don't have access to your login details, and you can always remove DecisionVault's access in ILS under Settings > API Access.
Configure Name Sync Formatting
Some firms prefer uppercase names to match long-standing document formatting conventions inside Interactive Legal. Others want names preserved exactly as entered in DecisionVault. This setting lets you decide once and stay consistent.
Under Interactive Legal Integration Settings, choose one of the following:
Name fields sync as entered
Example: Joe Peter Smith
Name fields sync in uppercase
Example: JOE PETER SMITH
This setting applies to first, middle, and last names and affects all future syncs.

2. Sync a Matter and Contacts to Interactive Legal
You can sync a matter from within DecisionVault by opening the matter and selecting Integrations → Interactive Legal.

During sync, DecisionVault will:
- Create a new client file in Interactive Legal or
- Update the existing client file if one already exists
Please note that Interactive Legal does not support selective contact syncing, as a result:
- All relevant contacts under the matter are synced together and will appear in Interactive Legal as one consolidated client file
This behavior is expected and intentional.
Before completing a sync, you’ll now see a warning message requiring explicit confirmation.

When you update a client file in Interactive Legal:
- Existing contact information in Interactive Legal will be replaced
- The order of contacts may change
- Documents that reference contacts by position (children, beneficiaries, parties, etc.) may be affected
If documents already exist in Interactive Legal:
- Gifts, roles, and designations should be reviewed after syncing
- This ensures references still point to the correct individuals
Once the sync is complete, open the client file in Interactive Legal to confirm contacts and roles are correct, particularly if documents already existed.
